Wire Rope Tips and Tricks for Longer Lasting Equipment

Before starting work, always inspect the rope for any visible damage such as distortion, broken or cut strands, and corrosion. Always keep a signed and dated periodic inspection report of the wire rope’s condition on file. This helps spot immediate hazards and ensures safe operations.

Handle with Care:

    • Always wear heavy gloves when handling wire ropes to protect your hands from sharp burrs that may develop over time.

Proper Maintenance:

    • Regular lubrication with a quality wire rope lubricant is essential to prevent rust and reduce wear on the wire rope.

    • When replacing fixed-length wire rope assemblies with permanently attached end fittings, always use pre-assembled wire rope lengths from the original supplier. Avoid constructing lengths from separate components.

Monitor for Abrasion:

    • Pay close attention to areas where the rope comes in to contact with other surfaces. Abrasion can weaken the rope over time, so it’s crucial to monitor and address any signs of wear.

    • Check for any obvious damage to the wire rope, including defects such as loss of rope diameter, distortion in the rope’s uniform structure, internal wear, and broken wires. Be sure to record the number, distribution, and type of broken wires.

    • Replace an entire wire rope assembly when necessary. Do not attempt to rework damaged wire rope or wire rope ends.

Storage:

    • Store wire ropes in a dry, covered area to prevent exposure to moisture and other elements that can cause rust and deterioration.

    • Wire rope should undergo a thorough inspection if they have been idle for a month or longer. A qualified inspector must perform the inspection, checking for any damage through a comprehensive assessment.

Maximizing Cost-Effectiveness:

    • Proper maintenance and care of wire rope can eliminate unnecessary downtime and prevent accidents caused by rope failure during use.

    • Regularly inspecting wire rope and replacing when out of tolerance is essential for achieving long-term usage, and ultimately reduced costs for the operation of the crane.

Following this routine maintenance can extend the lifespan of your hoist line and ensure safe operations.

To extend the lifespan of your wire rope and ensure safe operations, taking care to follow routine maintenance is imperative.

Sourcing and Installing Replacement Wire Rope

If you’ve determined your wire rope needs replacing, it is important to make sure the replacement wire rope you select will work for your specific lifting equipment and application.  It is also imperative that you follow the correct steps to install it.

Wire Rope Selection:

Replacing your damaged wire rope may not be as straightforward as one may think. The wire rope previously used may not be readily available or optimal for a specific application, or in the case of older equipment, may not even be known. Wire rope diameter, breaking strength and strand types all need to be considered. Walter Payton Power Equipment’s team can help determine the right rope for your equipment and application.

Wire Rope Installation:

Proper wire rope installation processes ensure new rope will spool properly, perform as intended, and last.  In general, the rope should be installed under tension to achieve proper spooling.  During the spooling process, avoid fleeting angles (sheave-to-sheave or sheave-drum) over 2.5° to avoid bending or kinking the wire rope.  Depending on the type of wire rope used, there may also be load training processes and/or recommendation of using a swivel to minimize wire rope twist.
